Stem Cell Therapies For Multiple Sclerosis

Taking stem cells from the patients itself stabilized their clinically profile and in some cases reduced neurological destruction in early cases of Multiple Sclerosis.

Stem cells are harvested from human embryos, even in adult organisms, possess an extraordinary power of regeneration. With their might "fix" virtually any organ affected by a serious illness. There are areas where these miraculous cells are already used successfully to save lives, such as bone marrow transplantation in patients with leukemia or cancer, and the latest research findings urge us to believe that the solution could be adopted for healing other diseases now considered incurable.

Thus, thousands of people suffering from multiple sclerosis may benefit from a revolutionary treatment that targets injecting stem cells from bone marrow, even from the patients. After a decade, researchers have sensed for the first time that stem cells could halt or even destroy the effects of the disease, "patch" actually affected regions of the brain and spinal cord. Recently, however, in the UK have been announced results of a study showing that treatment is indeed effective as multiple sclerosis can be cured.

Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease. The person's immune system cells destroy the myelin layer that surrounds and protects nerves. In the early stages of the disease, symptoms appear and after that, disappear. In time, Multiple Sclerosis causes permanent disability such as loss of sensation, speech disorders, and mental motion.

A group of researchers from the medical department of the University of Chicago reported in Lancet Neurology, they manage to stop this disease using stem cells from the bone marrow of patients in order to "reboot" the immune system.

Initially, the researchers isolated hematopoietic stem cells from bone marrow of patients who were in the early stages of the disease. This patients doesn't show an improvement over the usual administration of medications. After administration of a milder chemotherapy, were administered stem cells to Multiple Sclerosis patients. All patients noted improvement after cell transplantation. 17 of 21 patients began to improve the state for the next two years and their disability were significantly reduced.

In the past, similar studies showed a significant improvement of the clinical profile of patients, but also treat or even disappearance apomielotice plates. The main characteristic of patients who receive stem cells is the inability of usual medication to relieve the existing symptoms. These results are very satisfactory and opened new avenues in the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis.

Recently, some doctors using in treating Multiple Sclerosis patients stem cells from adipose tissue and the results were very promising. Today it is known that fat is an important source of stem cells since it has the largest number of stem cells compared to other sources.
